This April, we had to succumb to our itch. The travel itch that is… it had been driving us batty! That said, we decided what better adventure to add to our list than an adventure in China. We finally had the time, so we jumped on a plane and headed to the the land of the Great Wall, Peking duck and orange chicken. Side note – Our tour guide mentioned that China, on a map, looks like a chicken and I cannot look at the country differently now.
I will admit that even after traveling the world, including other areas of Asia, we were still a little nervous to head there. You hear stories from people that are a little terrifying. However, after traveling there, I will say I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Chinese. Yes the air is polluted, crowds are in the millions, and they spit everywhere, but their culture is persevered through their people. There is so much history and meaning in their culture everywhere you turn. Everyone there seems to have an understanding on how to live in such a crowded space. It is organized chaos.
Anyway, our first stop was in Beijing to see the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and have a drive through Olympic Park. Our second stop was Xi’an (pronounced She-An) with a highlight of Terracotta Warriors, morning exercises with the locals, Ancient City Wall and the treasures within. Chengdu was the third leg of our trip which is where we stopped to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and held baby pandas, which was my absolute favorite thing in the world – I LOVE PANDAS! Then we had a one night trip to Lèshān to see a giant Buddha and Mt. Emei before returning to stay another night in Chengdu. After, we headed to Shanghai to take in the city with the amazing skyline, Nanjing Road, and it’s many temples. Shanghai was our last stop before we headed back home and I cannot express how much I miss this country… Ok, fine! You got me! Maybe I do mainly miss the pandas, but nonetheless… I miss it and I will be back!
Want more? Well of course, it’s China! More posts to come!
